About this event
In this public lecture, former Senator Scott Ludlam will discuss learnings from his book, 'Full Circle: A search for the world that comes next'. This will be followed by a panel discussion on how students, activists and advocates can change the world for the better where he is joined by ICAN Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dimity Hawkins and Senior Lecturer in History and Politics Dr Julie Kimber.

Indigenous Peoples and Technology

Can health education learn from the humanities and social sciences

In this online discussion, Swinburne’s Dr Farnaz Zirakbash (sociology) and Dr Evie Kendal (health promotion and public health) will be joined by and CEO of WHISE Kit McMahon to examine the intersections between the social sciences and health education approaches, including the benefits for industry and in practice.
Creating just environmental transitions

Join a fascinating panel with experts in the environmental social sciences from Swinburne’s Centre for Urban Transitions, led by Lecturer in Sociology Dr Aisling Bailey. They will discuss how we create just environmental transitions.

Creating superheroes for social change workshop

Join Dr Naja Later for a free writing workshop on how to develop superhero characters, plotlines and narratives. Dr Later is an academic in Media and Communications at Swinburne University of Technology. She is a co-founder of the All Star Women’s Comic Book Club and co-organised the Women In Comics Festival in 2016.
Smartphone filmmaking for social change

They say the best camera is the one you have with you.
In this 90-minute seminar, Max and Shuai will discuss creative processes and narrative strategies specific to smartphone filmmaking for social change. They will also talk about collaborative filmmaking and how they use workshops to co-create digital stories and short films with participants from various backgrounds, including community groups and NGOs.
Join Max Schleser and Shuai Li to zoom in on the growing community of smartphone filmmaking. Learn how to shoot, edit on the fly, and create a short mobile-mentary (mobile documentary), digital story or micro-movie as an advocacy tool for not-for-profit organisations.
This 90 min online seminar will give you a brief overview of mobile storytelling, filming and editing with smartphone apps. Max, on Twitter @MaxMobile, will introduce apps for rooky (Adobe Spark Video, VN video editor, Splice) and pro storytellers (Adobe Rush, Luma Fusion, FiLMiC Pro). He will showcase workflows and tools he uses for experimental short and feature documentary productions (Max With a Keitai 2008, Frankenstorm 2013).
Shuai, on Tik Tok @ice_city_harbin, will talk about micro-movies and storytelling on Tik Tok, Facebook Stories and Instagram Reels.
Social change short films screening

A virtual film screening and panel discussion hosted by the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education.
Hosted by Felix Gyebi, the screening will feature films by:
- Samantha Edwards-Vandenhoek – multi-award-winning community-based design researcher, digital media artist and educator
- Vincent Giarusso – lecturer in Film and Television
- Max Schleser – Swinburne smartphone filmmaker
Spocks and Specks: When space scifi meets the social sciences

Sign up for Trivia Night where the space team will battle it out with the social sciences team to find out who knows the most space and pop culture facts.
Don’t worry social scientists, you don’t need to know astrophysics. And don’t fret astrophysicists, you don’t need to know social theory!
After an introductory spiel, each team will be in their own breakout room to collectively answer a short set of questions, before we all come together for the answers to each set and participate in the obligatory banter and mischief before repeating for a number of rounds. There will even be a perpetual trophy on offer for the winning team! Bonus points are on offer for people coming in themed attire.
