Short-term partner programs
At Swinburne, we offer short-term opportunities at our partner organisations around the world. Experience living in a foreign country, meet new people and broaden your horizons through a short-term program.
Short-term partner programs are offered by our partner organisations around the world and generally go for two to four weeks. You will need to arrange your own application and travel bookings as these programs are not led by Swinburne staff (faculty-led). You may be eligible for academic credit towards your Swinburne degree if you undertake a short-term partner program.
The application process for each program will be slightly different and will also vary depending on the type of program you are interested in (either an exchange place or a direct place).
Exchange place or direct place: which should you choose?
By participating in an exchange place, you'll get to study at one of our partner organisations around the world while continuing to pay your fees to Swinburne. This means you will enrol in the approved units for academic credit (12.5 to 25 credit points) and pay your uni fees to Swinburne, just as you normally would.
With a direct place, it's a little more complicated. You will need to contact and organise your place independently with the host organisation and pay the required fees directly to them.
The application process
You will need to conduct research on your program of interest, have your proposed study plan approved by your course coordinator and apply for your place. Once your application has been approved, you will need to organise your own flights and submit your transcript upon your return. Please check the process below for details.
Follow these steps to apply for an exchange place on a short-term partner program:
- Conduct research on your program of interest, including the academic content, cost and application process. If applying for an exchange place, you will pay the tuition to Swinburne but other costs to the partner
- Get a proposed study plan [PDF 45KB] approved by your course coordinator that clearly indicates the credits (if any) you will gain for your short-term partner program experience.
- Apply online with Swinburne Abroad. Make sure you upload your study plan. This step is also required if you're applying for an OS-HELP loan or a scholarship
- Swinburne Abroad will nominate you to your host university to secure the exchange place
- You will be provided with further instructions on how to complete your application for the program from the partner
- Once accepted. please provide your acceptance letter from the partner
- Organise your flights, insurance and depart on your adventure
- When you return, submit your transcript to the Swinburne Abroad office to finalise credit/exemptions (if applicable).
Note: Students who participate in a short-term partner program on an exchange place will be enrolled in a Swinburne holding code for the duration of the short-term partner exchange program.
Swinburne Abroad can provide you with a letter of enrolment so you may continue receiving Centrelink payments for the study period only.
Follow these steps to apply for a direct place on a short-term partner program:
- Conduct research on your program of interest, including the academic content, cost and application process. You will usually need to pay a fee to the partner organisation directly, instead of Swinburne, so make sure you understand what the fee covers
- Get a proposed study plan [PDF 45KB] approved by your course coordinator that clearly indicates if you will gain any credits (if any) for your short-term partner program experience
- Contact the relevant partner institution and apply directly to them
- Apply online with Swinburne Abroad. Make sure you upload your study plan along with your acceptance letter/email from the partner institution or organisation. This step is also required if you're applying for an OS-HELP loan or a scholarship
- Organise your flights, insurance and depart on your adventure
- When you return, submit your transcript to the Swinburne Abroad office to finalise credit/exemptions (if applicable).
Note: Students who participate in a short-term partner program will not be enrolled at Swinburne for the duration of the short-term partner program. Please be aware of any implications if you are receiving Centrelink payments.
This is your chance to have an experience of a lifetime.
