Final Assessment venues and seating 

In 2023, invigilated assessments will be held on Hawthorn campus. Be sure to know your assessment dates and times well in advance, and plan ahead how to get to your venues.

Try to arrive 30 minutes before the start of your assessment. If you arrive more than 30 minutes late, you will not be able to sit the assessment. For live updates on conditions that may affect your travel, check the Public Transport Victoria website.

The venue and seating for each of your assessments is listed on your personalised timetable in Student One - My timetable. Bring your seat allocation details with you, as they are not posted at assessment venues.

Once the assessment starts, you will not be able to leave the room in the first 30 minutes or the last 15 minutes. Toilet breaks are allowed and will be monitored by invigilators.

If, for any reason, you leave the assessment after 60 minutes of writing time, you will not be eligible for special consideration and, thus, not eligible to sit a special assessment at a later date. 

If you are attending a final assessment, you must be aware of what you can and can't take into your venue.

If you have a disability or medical condition and need to make special arrangements for your assessment, contact AccessAbility Services at the start of your teaching period.

What you must bring
  • identification (your student ID, a current passport or a current Australian driver's license) – if you do not bring identification, you may not be eligible to sit your assessment
  • seat allocation details
  • writing implements (pens, pencils, erasers, rulers).

What you may also bring
  • a clear water bottle with no writing or labels – the liquid must be transparent
  • a small number of hard sweets or lollies in clear wrappers (e.g. barley sugars) – they must have no writing on them and must not be disruptive to other students
  • calculator – if authorised for your assessment.


If you have any other items, you must place them in your bag under your chair or as directed by the invigilator. Please check your pockets before the assessment begins.

Mobile phones, smart watches and other electronic devices

You cannot have a mobile phone, a smart watch or other electronic devices on your person during the assessment. You must:

  • disable any alarm
  • turn off your phone, smart watch and other electronic devices
  • place your phone, smart watch and other electronic devices in your bag under your chair or as directed by the invigilator.


It is a misconduct if your phone, smart watch or other electronic device is on or plays an alarm. When in doubt, remove the battery if possible.
 

These activities are considered misconduct:

  • plagiarising
  • copying from other students
  • taking unauthorised or inappropriate aids or materials into an assessment
  • writing notes in dictionaries and other texts (including in another language)
  • stealing a copy of an assessment
  • letting someone else sit the assessment for you
  • communicating with another student (e.g. hand signals or talking).
     

If your invigilator sees any misconduct, you will still be allowed to finish the assessment. However, any material believed to be unauthorised will be confiscated.

You may be refused entry to the assessment room or be asked to leave if you fail to give the invigilator materials which they believe are unauthorised.

Any misconduct during an assessment will be formally reported to the assessment manager, who will record the incident and send a warning letter or initiate an investigation.

Invigilators are there to ensure the assessment is conducted fairly and appropriately. To avoid potential penalties, you will need to obey their instructions.

Penalties for assessment misconduct

If an investigation reveals reasonable evidence that a student has engaged in misconduct, the penalties are severe and can include cancellation of results and exclusion from the course.

Possible sanctions for academic misconduct are detailed in the Student Academic Misconduct Regulations.

Students with disabilities and carers

If you have a disability or are caring for someone with a disability, make sure you register with AccessAbility Services when you first enrol in your unit. 

You can apply for a personalised equitable assessment arrangement, but you need to have registered with AccessAbility Services at least six weeks before your assessment. 

The arrangement will then be sent to your student email by the Scheduling Services team.  

If you have not contacted AccessAbility Services at least six weeks before your assessment, there may not be time to put your arrangement in place.

Open Universities Australia students

Your final assessment schedule will be provided via Canvas at least four weeks before the assessment period. Your final assessment will be an online task provided by your unit convenors. 

Swinburne Online students

Hawthorn Online students outside Melbourne
