Study tour overview

Malaysia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, yet it is facing degradation of its ecosystems both in its wetlands and forests. Increasing climate change could accelerate these processes and threaten the country’s natural resources. In 2021, Malaysia dropped to the bottom 10 nations in the Climate Change Performance Index.

Your multidisciplinary knowledge holds the key to promoting an innovative and holistic approach to climate change. This Study Tour and the project within it provide an opportunity to enhance your global professional skills by working in multidisciplinary teams. You will engage and communicate with diverse stakeholders to collect data, and gain a deep understanding of real-world issue, all with the aim of developing innovative solution.

This is an opportunity for you to meet local students in Malaysia and together you will apply knowledge, skills, and passion to make a real difference in collaboration with local stakeholders.

This experience will accelerate your knowledge, growth mindset, interpersonal skills, and extend professional networking to exposure the impact of climate change in Malaysia. In collaboration with government, research, education, industry, and the local community partners, you will design and communicate a solution to address the real-world climate issue. The one that realise real lasting benefits for local communities and has a global impact. 

Your unforgettable journey ends with fun activities and visits of Batu Caves, Royal Selangor Centre, and Jungle School Gombak.

Highlights / tentative itinerary

After your arrival in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll get settled before waking up the next day to jump into a safety briefing, Malaysian cooking class, cultural immersion and welcome dinner.

The next few days of the Study Tour will then consist of:

  • Full days of company visits
  • Immersion of Batu Caves and Royal Selangor Centre, including hands-on cultural activities
  • A full day at Jungle School Gombak (learn about the rainforests from the Indigenous community, Orang Asli)
  • Time to work on your projects/presentations
  • Presentations, reflections and a farewell dinner

A busy and rewarding two weeks with your fellow students that will equip you with new skills and experiences to bring back home.

Eligibility and selection criteria

100 credit points completed at the time of application.

The following types of funding are available to help eligible students with the costs towards this program:

  • OS Help Loan of up to $8,817 (as at 2023)
  • Limited New Colombo Plan scholarships valued at AUD $3,000
