For the first time Swinburne has ranked in the top 350 of the world’s best universities in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
This continues Swinburne’s steady rise up the THE rankings of more than 100 places in the last two years, positioning Swinburne in the top three per cent of universities worldwide.
Swinburne’s Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Chief Scientist, Professor Virginia Kilborn, says this continues Swinburne's excellent track record of recent improvements in all the major worldwide rankings.
‘Our recent record of advancement in the major university world rankings tables is the result of Swinburne’s strategic focus of making deliberate choices in our research focus and driving real impact through industry engagement,’ says Professor Kilborn.
This year Swinburne has improved its position in a number of globally recognised rankings.
- The Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked Swinburne 258, up 11 places from 269 in 2020 and 109 places from 367 in 2019.
- The QS World University Rankings ranked Swinburne 321st globally, climbing 50 places
- Swinburne has increased its rankings across 14 subject areas in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
- Ranking second in the world for the proportion of highly cited papers in mathematics and computer science according to the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2021.
Innovation, technology and industry partnership driven by research
Swinburne’s internationally recognised research has been making an impact throughout 2021:
- The creation of the Space Technology and Industry Institute, led by Professor Alan Duffy, bringing together world-class capabilities in astrophysics, aerospace, aviation, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and education to tackle challenges at the edge of human understanding and imagination
- Launching the Victorian Hydrogen Hub in partnership with CSIRO and Germany’s ARENA 2036 to advance a net zero emission future
- World-leading research published in Nature that will influence climate modelling
- The first ever observations of the entire process of newly-created stars polluting the galaxy around it, confirming a major prediction of galaxy theory
- Expanding Swinburne's world-leading manufacturing capabilities with Melbourne-based additive manufacturing company Titomic bringing its TKF1000 system to Swinburne, one of only two such 3D printing systems ever built
- Partnering with industry to develop cost-effective, personalised medical technologies like biosensors that can detect cancer from a single drop of blood.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings judge research-intensive universities across five core pillars: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
